DHyG has been publishing its own journal since 1985. Today, Hydrographische Nachrichten is the only professional journal for hydrography and geoinformation in the German-speaking world. Three issues are published per year. The printed journal is sent to all members, libraries also receive a copy. Older issues are available in the HN archive.

Hydrographische Nachrichten publishes scientific articles as well as reports from the field and on current projects. New technical developments are highlighted, applications are reported on, and information is provided on what is happening at events. In addition, each issue features a multi-page scientific talk with a leading figure in hydrography. The articles are mainly published in German. However, some technical articles are also printed in English.

Journal of Applied Hydrography

Three major steps in the development of the association's organ have been made until today.

One year after the foundation of DHyG, in 1985, the first issue of the members' journal appeared, at that time still under the title DHyG Information. In this form, the editorial staff compiled a total of 35 issues by the end of 1994.

Then in 1995 the journal got its present name: Hydrographische Nachrichten. And it received a new appearance. In the 80th issue, which was published at the beginning of 2008, a further development step was announced: In the future, the journal was to be published only as a PDF document.

And indeed, in June 2008, the editorial team published the first exclusively digital publication with a completely different layout. For the first time, all pages were designed in color. And the magazine was also modernized in terms of content.

Since the 88th issue in October 2010, Hydrographische Nachrichten has appeared both as a paper edition and as a digital publication.

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) were introduced in the 109th issue. In addition, authors have since then had the opportunity to have their contributions subjected to a peer review process.
